Transit of Venus

4 Jun

So… don’t know if you guys had heard, but the Transit of Venus is happening tomorrow evening.  Technically, as the sun is setting… and it. sounds. awesome.  For starters, since the invention of the telescope, there have only been EIGHT sightings of Venus… you know, since no one could really knew what was out there before then.  Isn’t that crazy? So, no one living right now will see it EVER again because the next one will occur in 2117.  You may remember hearing about Venus 8 years ago, since these sighting occur in pairs, but the clouds kept us from seeing it on ground back in 2004.  But this is where you can watch Venus’s transit in relation to the Sun as it makes its way across tomorrow. There are also multiple articles like LA Times and The Guardian that provide lots of information about what to do and expect tomorrow.

In addition, for Atlantans, there are multiple places to witness the events, but I’ve heard through the grapevine that Grant Park is an ideal location. You can find information about reserving glasses here.  However, since time is cutting close, you may have to resort to alternative options:

(1)  You can apparently use welder’s goggles since you’re looking at directly at the sun. But if you do, you HAVE TO get the darkest possible glasses… No. 14!!!  Nothing less than these absolute darkest possible shades… and no stacking i.e. Putting No. 6 shade with No. 8 shades.  For more information about welder’s glasses, you can click here.

(2) If you’re like us (including the Ryu’s), you won’t be able to make it to a certain location to witness the event.  Thank goodness for the Internet!  There are a couple of sites that are offering live webcasts of this über rare event:

NASA

EXPLORATORIUM

Either way, I hope you all get a chance to enjoy this literally-once-in-a-lifetime (well, our lifetime)!!! And it’s okay if you’re not as excited as me… I have never once hid the fact that I’m a super nerd when it comes to weird stuff… but you better believe that I will be making my brothers and Chris watch it with me!  I mean, come on, who wouldn’t get excited about seeing something that someone else was able to witness back in 1639???  In 2012?!?!
